Well restaurant, a name portraying with accuracy how we feel there: well
First impressions last
Open in Spring 2017 in the residential area of Verdun, Well Restaurant brought us the original and trendy concept of brunch lunch café. The warmth and friendliness of the place, from the ambience to the service, are the main features that stood out from our visit at Well restaurant. Paule co-owns the restaurant with Peter Simard, who is the former owner of L’Entre-Pots, a breakfast & lunch café in the Plateau. Paule Vézina explains Peter and herself wanted to create a space where people could feel well, the way they would if they were at home, hence the name. “Well” is also diminutive for Wellington St., the street on which they are located.
Savory and comforting food
Paule told us her favorites were the Edamame toast and salmon gravlax, the Breakfast Poutine with bacon/ham, and the Il Fungo. We ended up picking two of her favorites, the Breakfast poutine and the Il Fungo, along with the Yogurt and Fruit Ricotta Pancakes. The Breakfast Poutine normally comes with bacon or ham, but we decided to replace it with fried chicken for an extra. The veal stock sauce and spicy sauce added a lot of flavor and, while it was the most indulgent dish on the menu, it didn’t feel too heavy. The chicken was also super tasty.
The Yogurt and Fruit Ricotta Pancakes, on their side, were soft with a little cinnamon hint.
Finally, the vegan and gluten-free Il Fungo, composed of pan fried mushrooms, tofu and nuts served on arancini, was full of flavor, and was definitely our favorite. Following Paule’s recommendation, we had added an extra sunny side up. The dripping egg yolk added extra richness and flavor to the dish. The arancini filling came out rich and soft, with a nice crispy crust. Arancini comes from Sicily, Italy, and it means little orange, the Island’s typical fruit. Usually filled with risotto and cheese, this vegan and gluten-free version was alternatively filled with a rich and soft mix of risotto, onions and mushrooms, coated with homemade gluten-free bread crumbs. A varied menu with generous portions of comforting food is what to expect at Well restaurant.
To wrap it up
Well restaurant does make us want to go back for a simple and filling brunch/lunch…because it is a place where it feels well to be. Good food is one thing, but the cozy and charming atmosphere is what madethe difference.
Open from 8am until 3 pm: plenty of time for a MYUMMY experience!!!!
